Twenty-one years after the release of their award-winning collaboration, Children of the Midnight Sun, Brown and Corral again teamed up to interview and photograph ten new subjects for a new book about modern life in Alaska’s ancient cultures, traveling in and out of remote villages over a two-year period.

All ten Alaska Native people groups are included, with one child from each culture representing his or her people. The kids, each from 9 to 12 years old, talk about what they do for fun, their favorite Native foods, their travel ways, favorite sports, and what they’re learning from their elders. It is a slice of 21st-century life in a place that’s uniquely American.

No other book for children delves into all ten cultures with such authority or transports readers to the wild rivers, coastal islands, broad rainforest, and tundra expanses of Alaska. Children of the First People is a rare treasure.

Every year, a list of books representing the literary heritage of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Territories is distributed by the Library of Congress’s Center for the Book during the National Book Festival. Each book is selected by a Center for the Book state affiliate or state library.

We’re proud to announce that Children of the First People was the 2020 National Book Festival Selection for Alaska!
